parenting

Tokyo, 2008.02.05

It's been a busy week. Now that we're a family, life's been turned upside down and we're getting a feel for our new responsibilities and how to meet them.

All I've really learned about parenting so far can be summed up in a few sentences:

  • Becoming a parent makes you something more of an adult

  • A significant part of having a newborn around seems to entail forgetting any standards in planning. All your plans become unworkable when there's a helpless infant in the picture. The permanent jetlag feeling has something to do with it, I'm sure.

  • Standards in hygiene change, too. Tonight I found myself holding off doing the dishes to wipe away a hardened stain of yellow infant shit from my thumbnail.
