Sleep
Last week was a difficult one. On Tuesday little 建 had surgery. I go into all of the gory details on his website, but suffice it to say that Mari and I haven't been getting much sleep of late.
The doctors didn't use stitches to hold together the surgery wound, but instead used a piece of some clear sticky material. That fell off last night as I washed him, so the physical remnant of the surgery is a simple line of purple skin.
But since the surgery, we've been trying to adopt the sleep and feeding schedule outlined in Gina Ford's book The Contented Little Baby. And to my surprise, it's worked quite quickly. We've now had two uninterrupted nights (about six hours each time). Those nights weren't back to back mind you, but in the past twelve weeks that's all we've had.
The lack of sleep has had a bit of an impact on me. I've gained quite a bit of weight, and though I planned to go to the gym this weekend I was unable to contemplate it—instead I had several naps. As I write this on a Monday morning, I wonder if I'll be able to make it through the day at the office; recently I've been occasionally adopting the Japanese habit of putting my head down and taking a nap for ten minutes.
