picnic

Tokyo (Zushi), 2008.10.19

Today we decided to give the new binoculars a trial. We packed a backpack full of various hiking things and I shouldered little Ken in the sling we've got. We decided we'd go down to Zushi and hike up a mountain. From the top we'd be able to see Mt. Fuji and the sweep of the ocean.

Except, when we got to Zushi the weather wasn't cooperating. It was hazy with intermittent cloud and a funny kind of light. It was clear that we'd not be able to see Mt. Fuji.

But the breeze coming off the sea was warm and there were plenty of places to enjoy a meal by the water, so we set up a little snack of onigiri and played with Ken in the grass.

Then we decided to get some exercise after all, and walked along a long pebble beach. When we'd had enough we stopped at a bus stop and headed back to the city.

The binoculars got a fair bit of use, and it was a good introduction to an extended walk with Ken in the sling. In all, a pleasant family day.

The way you write science fiction is: you sit down at your writing machine and you open your mind to the first thought that comes through. My first thought was always a cigarette.
