success
I've got one abbreviated week left of my current job. Then it's off into the unknown: I'm starting a business of my own. It's pretty exhilirating in the same way that standing near a high precipice is. There will be more about this to come in this very journal, I'm sure.
As for the day job. I stayed in a bit late last night to get a final report out of the way before the final wind-up. Mine was a job of process implementation in a field that directly impacted the company's ability to make money. I was able to demonstrate a 70% improvement in 2008 over 2007, the year that I took over the file mid-way through. Early response from the firm indicates that it was my little operation that made this improvement reality. This feels like a substantial accomplishment, especially given the long, hard slog it took to make changes in such a enormous company along such a high-profile area as mine was.
In creating my own business, one of my many goals is to be my own boss and ensure that my efforts are directed towards providing for my family directly—rather than depending on the boom-and-bust cycle of IT work (which, frankly, is becoming more and more bust-and-bust as the years go on). I'm quite pleased to see that I was as able in a non-technical role at this latest job as I have been in more technical positions earlier in my career. It helps that I'm switching careers on a high note.
