sand dunes!
Tottori, 2010.04.09
Today we flew to Tottori in western Japan for Jon and Manami-san's wedding. Arriving mid-day, we went directly to the town's sand dunes.
The dunes form along the sea shore, which is nothing new, but they do reach amazing heights—at their highest they're a good 100 meters plus above the adjacent Sea of Japan. That body is a rough one, and it's no surprise that the winds are strong enough to generate such high dunes, but it's still something to see!

We kicked off our shoes and climbed the largest dune first. Naturally I then went down to the beach to photograph the more complex set of smaller dunes there.
Sadly, the second and third gotchas from not using my camera for three months came up. The batteries—depsite being fairly new—had clearly ben drained for some reason while the camera sat unused. And the film in the camera was colour, not black-and-white as the camera-back insert from an old film box suggested. So my use of a yellow filter was not too good. Rats.
