the wedding reception

Tokyo, 2010.05.01

Today we went to the Tokyo wedding reception of Jon and Manami-san. It was two weeks after their wedding.

It's the same thinig that Mari and I did back in 2006/2007. We did our paperwork in November, then had our ceremony on a beach in Thailand that same month. It wasn't until the following March that we had our reception here in the city. A chance for friends and family to get together and share in our wedding. In the case of Jon and Manami-san, they had their wedding in Tottori but like us they wanted to have a party for friends here in Tokyo.

Before the reception, though, I had to scramble a bit. I'd decided to make then a Buddha carved in wood and when the day began I had neither completed the carving nor added the wood finish. So I spent about four hours working on the final detail work and the sanding, then raced up to Shibuya on my bike to get some wood finish at trusty ol' (if obscenely expensive) Tokyu Hands. By the time I got back I had less than an hour for a final round of touch-ups and applying the finishing.

Three good things that happened today:
1. a party for some friends
2. completed a piece of art for the first time in years
3. a fine afterparty
