snow on the streetcar

Today a man got on the streetcar with a girl about eighteen months old. His older son (maybe all of four) had boarded first with an armful of icy snow.

I'm not sure whether the father knew that the boy had the snow/ice-ball with him (the man looked a bit run down) but the boy immediately tossed the thing onto the floor of the streetcar, smashing it and sending its debris everywhere. He then proceeded to kick it down the length of the streetcar making a mess of everything.

Several adults turned to look at the spectacle but no one said much. I couldn't help but smile, thinking a) that The Boy would soon be doing that sort of thing and b) on this night, it wasn't The Boy and I could enjoy the fun the kid was having.
