feeling confident

Toronto, 2011.06.24

A while ago I entered a photo book competition. There are now ~700 entries!

At that level, I can't imagine that they're going to do more than look at the covers of the books to narrow it down to maybe 30 final entries. Probably didn't think that through enough when I paid the fee to print the book for submission. Ah, well.

Today there was a free concert by Aretha Franklin on the grounds of the old Metro city hall. Mari suggested that we go while we ate breakfast, so at noon I dropped by the place to see how we could get tickets. At that time, there were already 20-30 people waiting in line. They told me that the tickets (wrist bands, actually) would be given out at four o'clock. I sent Mari a text message, and she headed down for four o'clock.

At 16:05 I got a phone call from her. All of the tickets were gone. They two of them waited in a Second Cup for two hours for me to finish work, and when I joined them we went to Hernando's Hideaway on Front Street East. It's a Tex-Mex place that I went to rather frequently in the 90's; much to my astonishment someone there remembered me. I guess I used to single-handedly make my way through their "Two Fingers" tequila.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
