what could go wrong, did go wrong

Toronto, 2011.12.08

Four blocks from the office, the rear tire on my bike went flat.

Walking the bike to a lockup pole outside the building that houses my office, I realized that I wouldn't be able to lock the bike up for the simple reason that I'd left my keys at home. Along with my mobile phone. And my wallet.

Taking the bike up the elevator, I realized that I would not be able to lock my bike up at the University tonight during my exam. So, no sense in repairing the flat today only to leave the bike somewhere that it could be stolen: I'd just have to leave it on the balcony at the office overnight, then take it tomorrow.

When I left the office to get to my exam, I realized that I had no tokens for the TTC and no cash. Happily, I met two of my coworkers who provided me with both.

Sad state of affairs!

The way you write science fiction is: you sit down at your writing machine and you open your mind to the first thought that comes through. My first thought was always a cigarette.
