lego ambulance kit design
I like trucks. I designed a basic truck and from that started to build out special vehicles. The first of these is an ambulance.
Ambulances are a bit of a challenge to design. They have the big opening rear doors to accommodate, and plenty of complex gear inside which can't obstruct the entry of the stretcher.
features
The ambulance itself has these features:
- functional rear doors
- detachable ladder
- a small storage area accessible from the exterior
- a detailed interior with: two bottles for compressed air; bench; drawers; monitoring console
- a red-and-white colour scheme based on various real-world ambulance designs, as well as coloured lights and a big red cross (I couldn't effectively add the red crescent at this scale)
- detailed cab with tilting steering wheel.
- basic truck details such as fenders, turn signals, drive train, exhaust pipe and grill.
stretcher
Modern ambulance stretchers are a technical miracle all of themselves. They're built with collapsing frames so that they may be lowered to the ground to ease someone onto the thing. The frame then extends upwards so that it can be maneuvered easily, and can be pushed directly into the back of the ambulance.
Designing this took me quite a while. Eventually, I realized that I couldn't build the thing so that it would collapse in its own footprint, the way that a real one does. But I don't think my design is too bad at all: it does have a fairly small footprint when collapsed, and the action is fairly natural. Also, it uses a minimum of pieces.
kit
The kit is located here. Note that I made this kit for fun (this one is going to be a gift for my elder nephew) and that I do not make money from sales of this model: I link for the sake of sharing.
