lego space craft: explorer model F

by m. werneburg, 2009.01.09

In the 1970's, I had a bunch of the original space lego sets. I liked them so much that I actually got the little space lego insignia done as a tattoo. In honour of those early space craft, I've designed some of my own.

This one is my "Model F" exploration craft with a crew of two robots. Based on the success of the earlier "Model C", the same manufacturer produced the smaller "Model C". This is a more inexpensive model featuring a robot crew that allows the owner to send the craft on longer-range trips. As such it is primarily designed as a deep-space explorer and is not intended to function in planetary environments with an atmosphere. This means that large wings are unnecessary.

As this is a deep-space exploration craft it doesn't have the same array of communications gear. Instead it features a faster-than-light drive (twin-singularity type, mounted behind the canopy).

Rumours of robot crews "going rogue" are unsubstantiated.

features

This is not a warship, and as such is unarmed. It does have as full a complement of scientific and communications doo-dads as the "Model C". Features are:

  • two engine nacelles in a "down" configuration
  • small atmospheric wings stowed in an "up" configuration
  • forward side-looking radar dish for asteroid-penetrating geologic imaging
  • forward camera and radiation detector
  • forward collector for dust, gases, etc
  • extensive instrumentation panels
  • ladder for boarding and exiting

Details include running lights, and "glowing" exhaust ports on the engines

kit

The kit is located here. Note that I made this kit for fun (this one is going to be a gift for my elder nephew) and that I do not make money from sales of this model: I link for the sake of sharing.
