street photographers in Tokyo
Tokyo is a street photographer's dream city. It's a big, crazy place that's full of interesting and distinct neighbourhoods. It's also dotted with the bizarre architectural backdrops and dense infrastructure that make for great photos.
I've found that photographers are treated quite well, even welcomed. Asking to take a photo is a polite thing to do, but I haven't even found it necessary in the city (the countryside is another matter). A simple "shashin tote-mo ii-desuka?" is generally all you need to get around.
I've recently put together a book of my humble pics, but I know that I'm not in the class of the really good street photographers operating in this city, so I thought I'd share some links. In no particular order, here are:
Alfie Goodrich. I'm not sure why the photographer insists on such heavy watermarks and copyright statements, but the work is damn fine.
Chris Jongkind, who tends to capture the city at night and/or with few people about.
Sean Wood, who mixes excellent street photos with pics on other themes.
Masaki Hosaka, a medium-format photographer whose work exudes the patience of the medium.
Brian Scott Peterson, whose site's got a perfect vibe to it.
Joon Tham, whose globe-trotting for Sony is based in Tokyo.
Tatsuo Suzuki, who like me uses black and white.
