tattoo requests

by m. werneburg, 2005.04.23

Many people have left queries on my site asking if I could design a tattoo for them. While I have worked with some ideas given to me by others, I am not a professional (or even amateur) artist, I just cobble these things together when the mood strikes me. I don't even know how to begin to go about designing something to order. I don't have the software, training, etc etc. Sorry!

That said, here are some things I can offer to help:

  • If you want to use one of my existing tattoo designs, just let me know. And if you're happy with it, send me a pic—I have never seen one of my designs on someone else!
  • Go to your locale tattoo shops and have a look at the 'flash' (tattoo designs) on the walls or on display, and be sure to go through their catalog. These latter tattoos are typically photos of work that they've actually done, so you get a pretty good idea for the talents of the artists as well as getting ideas.

    What's more, it is possible to walk into a tattoo shop with your ideas and discuss getting a design built from scratch. Some tattoo artists won't do this kind of work because they've been burned before on working on a design only to never have the person come back. But you might find one willing to create a design, especially if you pay a deposit.

  • Have a look 'round the 'net. There are professionals out there who can do a much better job than I can. And yes, they will expect to be paid.*
  • Draw it yourself. Given a clean workspace, some paper, a pencil and some practise, you'll probably surprise yourself by creating something you like. The same can be said for drawing software packages. My first self-designed tattoo came from me fiddling around with the 'draw' utility of a free word processing package, so you can make computer sketches with just about anything. Whatever you do, don't believe the "I cannot draw" and "I am not a creative person" mentality.

*Notice to tattoo artists—if you want me to link in your on-line tattoo design site, let me know. I'll add a link on this page (this part of my site drives hundreds of page views a day).

rand()m quote

I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time.
