now raising an ant colony

Toronto, 2015.07.20

I've captured an ant queen for The Boy's small ant farm. The original ants we ordered died in short order, so I did a little looking around and discovered that it's possible to find your own ant queen just milling about outside at certain times of the year. It took me a couple of tries, but a knowledgeable source in the city assures me that I've got the right sort of critter.

We peeled back the dark paper on the ant farm to see that she had in fact dug in to the sand. She'll apparently take a month to grow (using stored reserves – it's amazing what insects can do) and start laying eggs. I'm adding a few drops of water to the ant farm, daily, but we'll otherwise leave her alone.
